Building a Skincare Routine That Actually Holds

Four products, used consistently, outperform twelve used sporadically. The dermatology-approved minimum routine, and how to expand it without wrecking your barrier.

The best routine is the one you will still be doing in six months. Complexity is the enemy of adherence, and adherence is the only variable that reliably predicts results.

The minimum effective routine

  • Morning: gentle cleanser, antioxidant serum, broad-spectrum SPF 50
  • Evening: gentle cleanser, treatment active, moisturiser
  • That is four products. Everything else is optional refinement.

Adding actives without damage

Introduce one new active at a time, twice weekly, for two weeks before increasing. Never start two actives in the same fortnight — when irritation appears you will not know which to stop.

Sunscreen is the only product in your routine that is genuinely non-negotiable.

Signs you are over-treating

  • Stinging on application of water-based products
  • Tight, shiny skin with fine flaking
  • New sensitivity to products you tolerated before
  • Breakouts that appear only after starting more products

Frequently asked

Do I need a toner?

No. A well-formulated cleanser and moisturiser make toner optional.

Can I use vitamin C and retinol together?

Yes, but separate them — vitamin C in the morning, retinoid at night.

How much sunscreen is enough?

Two finger-lengths for face and neck, reapplied around midday.

Is this article a substitute for a consultation?

No. This article is educational. Treatment decisions at New Me are made after an in-person skin assessment, medical history review and, where relevant, imaging or patch testing.
